Getting Back into Shape

Being pregnant and giving birth changes your body. You may want to lose some extra weight you gained during pregnancy or you may just want to feel healthy and energetic again.
Exercise helps you feel good by:
- Reducing backaches, constipation and bloating
- Lifting your spirits and improves posture
- Helping build muscle tone and strength
- Promoting better sleep
Once your doctor says it is okay to start exercising, there are many ways to be active.
Daily chores are considered exercise too! And will help get you back in shape. Doing things like vacuuming, sweeping, laundry, dishes, gardening and even grocery shopping are great ways to burn calories.
- Try to do chores for at least 30 minutes at a time.
- Wondering what to do with your baby while you clean? Try using a baby carrier or baby sling. There are many different kinds of baby carriers. You may have to try a few different kinds until you find the one that you and your baby are most comfortable with. Your baby will love being carried close to your body and it will help you get things done!
Walking is a great way to exercise because it puts very little stress on your body. Your baby will probably enjoy being walked in a stroller too! Try walking briskly for 20-30 minutes every day or at least 3 times per week.
- Meet with a friend or other new moms to go walking. It’s good to get out of the house and connect with friends or other new mothers. You will enjoy the chance to talk about your baby or to just be with other adults!
- Need a stroller? Call the Family Health Hotline at 1-800-322-2588. Or try a local resale or thrift store for an inexpensive stroller.
Exercise classes are another fun way to get in shape and sometimes you can find a class that will include your baby. For example, look for a mom and baby yoga class in your area.
- The YMCA is a good place to find exercise classes for moms and babies. Some YMCAs offer financial assistance. They may also offer childcare for your baby while you exercise. To find out if you have a YMCA in your area go to www.ymca.net If you live in the greater Seattle area go to www.seattleymca.org/page.cfm
